Home Guards
1 The Volunteers of Home Guards Organisations are auxiliary to the General police. They play a vital role in maintenance of internal security, law and order, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, V.I.P. security, traffic control, night patrolling and guard duties in various Public Sector Units. They also render voluntary services in rescue and relief operation during natural calamities.
2 Currently, the enrolled strength of Home Guards of the State is 11,632. Of which,10, 683 are men and 949 women.
3 Their deployment on requisition help increase State Revenue by collecting Capitation charge. During the financial year 2005-06 (up to December,2005), the Capitation charges @ of Rs.20/-per Home Guard per day, amounting to Rs.76,05,582, have been collected and deposited in the Government Treasury for deployment of 1339 Home Guards.
4 Shri Ratnakar Nayak, Platoon Commander, Home Guard, Cuttack district; Shri Prakash Ch. Sahoo, Assistant Section Leader, Home Guard, Rourkela district and Smt. Sunita Bahera, Section Leader, Woman Home Guard, Puri district have been awarded with Home Guards and Civil Defence medal by the President of India on the occasion of Independence Day,2005.
5 About 1500 Home Guards of the State were mobilised for law and order duty in Chhatisgarh State in connection with the three tier Gram Pachayat Election, 2005. They performed their duty well.
6 During the year 2005 up to December, the 921 Urban and 948 Rural Home Guards were trained in Basic course of training.
