HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION
1 In the year 2005, the 2550 cases, relating to the dowry and non-dowry torture, were registered. In the year 2003 and 2004, the similar registered cases, respectively, were 2269 and 2312. There is an increase of 10.2% in this crime compared to the last year. Of the 2550 cases registered in 2005, the 1247 have been charge-sheeted, 7 ended in Final Report, 27 turned out Mistake of Fact/Mistake of Law, 6 turned out to be non-cognizable and 18 false. The remaining 1245 cases are pending for investigation.
2 The rising awareness among women for their rights and status is translating into the reporting of more and more cases of torture of women. Perhaps, this factor accounts for the rising trend of registration of such cases in the Police Stations.
