Prison Administration
1. There are 70 Jails of different kinds functioning in the State of Orissa under the Administrative Control of Directorate of Prisons, Orissa, Bhubaneswar. Out of them, there is one open air jail called Biju Patnaik Open Air Ashram at Jamujhari. The scheduled accommodation available in these70 Jails is 8637 for males and 588 for females aggregating to 9225. Against this, the prison population, as on 31.03.2007, 13306 (male) and 477 (female). There are 50 children below 6 years living with their mothers. Out of them 133 are Naxalites confined to different jails.

For the Meritorious Service in Correctional Services one officer from Jails wing has own the Distinguished Medal(for the first time in Prisons Administration) and 9 other officers have won the President’s Correctional Service Medal for Meritorious Service.
3 One Jail Training School is functioning at Berhampur. It imparts in-service training to Jail Officials, guarding personnel and Correctional Officials. The syllabus of the Training School was reviewed recently and the subjects of Criminology and Human Rights were introduced. Considering the importance of Correctional Administration, the Correctional Officers are being regularly deputed to the National Institute of Criminology and, Forensic Sciences, New Delhi for training. Workshops on Human Rights in Prisons were organized at Burla and Bhubaneswar in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission and Bureau of Police Research Development, New Delhi.
The following courses were conducted in the Jail Training School
i) Basic training course for 9(Nine) Nos of custodial Officers from 05.04.2006 to 05.10.2006.
ii) Refresher Training Course for 18 Head warders and Warders from 17.04.2006 to 06.05.2006.
iii) Short Course Basic Training for 29 Contractual Warders and Home Guards from 01.07.2006 to 21.07.2006.
iv) Basic Training Course for 25 Head Warders/Warders from 13.11.2006 to 01.08.2007.
